While Topsail Beach and much of Surf City is served by Pender County schools, students in northern Surf City, North Topsail Beach, Holly Ridge and Sneads Ferry attend Onslow County schools. Onlsow Couty schools serve approximately 24,000 students and has 20 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, 7 high schools, 1 early childhood development center, and one alternative learning program.
In this area elementary students attend Dixon Elementary which is located at 130 Betty Dixon Road in Holly Ridge.
Dixon Elementary is loud and proud and with good reason. Their 2010 Odyssey of the Mind Team came in 1st place at the Regional Competition, 1st place at the State Competition in Charlotte, and competed in the World Odyssey of the Mind competition. The school is also a charter member of the National Elementary Schools Honor Society. Community involvement is huge and ranges from volunteer tutors to adopt a classroom activities. Dixon Elementary serves more than 700 students and is located off Hwy. 210 between US 17 and Hwy. 172.
Middle school students attend Dixon Middle School which is located at the intersection of Hwy. 17 and 210. Only 100 middle-grades schools have been named “Schools to Watch” and Dixon Middle School is one of them. As part of a nineteen state recognition and school improvement program, the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform identifies schools across the United States that are well on their way to meeting the Forum's criteria for high performance including academic excellence. Dixon Middle School is also a charter member of the National Junior Honor Society and offers advanced classes in algebra and geometry. Dixon Middle School serves 600 students in grades six through eight.
High school students attend Dixon High School which is located at the intersection of Hwy. 17 and 210 in Holly Ridge. The Dixon Bulldogs are known for their fierce competitive spirit both on the field and in the classroom
