Pender County Schools serve over 8000 students in grades pre-kindergarten through grade 12. There are seven elementary schools, four middle schools, three traditional high schools and one Early College high school. Each school day 1,200 employees work together to provide an environment that capitalizes on all children's natural curiosity, nurtures their desire to learn, and respects their individual learning style.

The district's College and Career Readiness Initiative enables middle school students to enroll in high school courses. Once students enter high school, they are ready to enroll in honors and advanced placement courses that further strengthen student preparation for college and the workforce before high school graduation. During the 2010-2011 school year thirty Pender Early College High School students graduated with at least one full year of college transferable credits.

The Pender County Advancement Center Program opened during the 2010-2011 school year through funding received from a Dropout Prevention Grant. The program is a resource for students whose educational or life circumstances prevent them from attending school in the traditional school setting.

One of the school district’s most innovative projects is the World of Warcraft Project. In this project, a middle school teacher uses video games to enhance student English skills. The school district received a $30,000 grant from Breneman-Jaech Foundation to purchase equipment, pay for subscriptions, and develop the curriculum.

Volunteers are needed to help enrich student learning experiences by serving as tutors, resource speakers, and role models. Schools need project judges, exam proctors, clerical assistance, or use your green thumb to help with grounds beautification. High school students need mentors for senior projects, internships, and job shadowing opportunities. Contact your local school, or the Public Information office, to discuss these and other volunteer opportunities.
