Those who retire to this area have so many housing options available to them it can be tough to choose where to live. There are quiet neighborhoods with tree-lined streets, large oceanfront homes decked out with amenities, low-maintenance patio homes on great golf courses, high-rise condominiums with terrific views and quiet, tucked-away cabins on one of the area's many sounds, creeks or rivers. Senior adult or retirement communities are those with congregate housing intended specifically for older occupants. These communities feature single homes and/or apartments providing several services, which may include meals in a central location, housekeeping, a pool, transportation and social activities. They may or may not offer healthcare services. While there are no retirement communities here in Topsail, there are a few in Hampstead and many more to choose from in Wilmington. For further assistance, contact the chamber of commerce or one of the government agencies listed at the end of this section.
